"While some people dismiss climate change as propaganda, its influence is evident in our daily lives, from local unrest to global migration trends"
What is your name and where are from?
My name is Akman Sofuoglu from Ankara, Turkey.
Have you heard the term Climate change?
Climate change is a complex issue that knows no boundaries, impacting ecosystems, economies, and human lives worldwide.
What is the climate over there?
Overall I do not see many changes in the environment in my hometown but if we dig up the data from last decade we will certainly observe the change in temperatures, especially in summers.
Do you guys see any changes in the climate during past few years
Here in Turkey, a nation celebrated for its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, we see the effects of climate change in numerous ways. From increasing temperatures to changing rainfall patterns, the evidence is all around us. In this testimony, I want to share Turkey’s climate journey, highlighting issues like pollution, migration, and agricultural resilience. While some people dismiss climate change as propaganda, its influence is evident in our daily lives, from local unrest to global migration trends. In Ankara and other cities, pollution is a constant companion. Smog, traffic emissions, and industrial waste lead to tangible problems such as respiratory illnesses, reduced quality of life, and environmental degradation. Despite the clear signs, climate change remains a confusing topic for many families. Some people see small temperature changes, like from 32 to 33 degrees Celsius over a decade, as insignificant. However, these subtle shifts hide deeper changes that affect ecosystems, livelihoods, and our future. The impacts are real and present, shaping our world in profound ways.
What does your family think about the climate change?
Climate change discussions are rare in my family.
What is your opinion on climate change, why does it occur, and what is the main cause?
Turkey's climate attracts tourists from Africa during their heat waves, as they seek relief in our cooler summers. However, this surge of visitors strains local resources and disrupts communities, making it difficult to manage migration smoothly. The mix of different cultures and lifestyles can create tensions, as locals adjust to the sudden population increase. Policymakers face the challenge of balancing hospitality with sustainability. In agriculture, May is a critical month for our wheat crops. Recognizing these seasonal patterns is vital for creating effective policies. We need to strengthen our resilience by investing in drought-resistant crops and supporting farmers. As the EU Green Deal approaches, Turkey's dependence on coal poses risks. Tackling climate change is not just about protecting the environment but also about ensuring our energy security, especially with current geopolitical tensions.
